Take a leaf out of the Campbell's book

Having started out in the 90's as waged dairy farm workers with next to nothing, the Campbells (not their real name) now have equity in excess of $3 million. A big part of their success can be attributed to the Strategic Planning workshop the Campbells attended as part of the BNZ Partners Growth Programme. Now they have a strategic plan stuck to their wall. And with 125 hectares of prime dairy country, a brand new milking shed, lakeside property and a kiwifruit orchard, they're sticking with it.

Follow in the Browns' footsteps

The Browns (not their real name) were running a successful farming operation in mid Canterbury, but wanted to spend more time boating, travelling and enjoying life. However, while their son was keen to continue with the dairy farming tradition, they didn't want to sell the family silver or burden him with unmanageable debt. Having attended the Protection and Succession Planning workshop, they developed a bold plan. They have since sold their farm, unlocking enough equity to enjoy life. When their son finishes his OE he'll start work on a smaller dairy farm the Browns have converted.

Follow the Shaws' lead

The Shaws (not their real name) are running a successful Kiwifruit orchard in the Eastern Bays, and being around 50 years of age, are thinking about retirement. The plan was to work hard, sell up and then spend the proceeds. But having attended Bank of New Zealand's Wealth Management workshop, the Shaws were introduced to a bold new thought: to use the proceeds of the orchard sale to invest in income generating entities. That way as well as having enough to live on, they'd also be able to pass on a legacy to their children. Even better, once they had calculated the income they'd need to live on, they discovered they were a lot closer to retirement than they realised. Now the Shaws have their retirement plan documented, timelined, signed and dated. And the orchard is on track for sale within the next three years.

Take stock of the Wilsons' experience

Being owners of an award-winning stud near Cambridge, the Wilsons (not their real name) were doing everything right when it came to breeding horses. However, they recognised that being leaders with the horses didn't automatically make them natural leaders of people. That's when the Wilson's BNZ Partner, Keith Lunn (his real name), had a bold new thought. "The BNZ Partners Growth Programme People and Leadership workshop would be good for you." So the Wilsons went along and learned strategies for better managing their employees; from structuring interviews to conducting appraisals and dealing with individual incidents. As a result, the Wilsons feel they not only hire better people for the job, they're better at managing them. And comments from the staff back that up too. So now, as well as having some of the best bred horses, the Wilsons also have happier, more involved staff members with a better idea of their own potential.
